Why visit
Brewsdale is a narrow lowland valley situated in farmland with a tributary of the River Leven flowing through it. The valley has fairly steep slopes, made up of scrub woodland with Hazel, Hawthorn and Ash well distributed along with several large specimens of Field Maple. Spring and early summer are a good time to see a range of woodland species including; Early Purple Orchid, Primrose, Hairy St Johns Wort and Sanicle. The summer also provides the opportunity to see good numbers of Ringlet butterfly along many of the woodland paths. The hedgerows adjoining the reserve can be good place to see farmland species such as Yellowhammer and Tree Sparrow.
How to get there
Access to the site can be gained by following the track down from Hilton village’s football pitch, approximately 100 metres outside the village on the road to Seamer. Access around the reserve is via a number of permissive footpaths, which can be muddy after heavy rain. Care should be taken when using the steps on the reserve as these can some times be slippery.
Opening times
Open all year round from sunrise to sunset.
