Growing food for the future
Tees Valley Wildlife Trust have appointed Richard Perks as the Growing Food for the Future Officer, this a fantastic opportunity for schools in the Tees Valley to get involved with what we are doing. If you already have a growing area or have even just a few pots for some herbs, or would like to set one up, we would like to get involved, our project is lottery funded and has a small budget to help schools set up areas in the school grounds.
Since the start of the project in January 2010, Richard has worked with over 15,000 pupils. Lessons have included planting seeds, maths work, the science behind growing, craft sessions, building scarecrows, building compost bins and building wormary.
Many of the schools are starting to look at hens. The wildlife trust can help with the designing building and installation of the enclosure and hen house. This is a fantastic method of teaching science and money skills through the sale of the eggs.

Congratulations to
Throston Primary School in Hartlepool -Below
Pupils have worked extra hard this year, and have just been awarded the Green Flag Award. The pupils proved that they are looking after the environment, through litter picks, turning off lights when leaving the class room and producing a fantastic crop of herbs, potatoes and fruits. Hartle the heghog even turned up to meet pupils and parents on the big day.
Below - Vicky Kirby and pupils from Fens Primary School in Hartlepool. The pupils at Fens primary have turned an unused area into a fantastic usable allotment. The school now has new raised beds and a new shed, pupils from the Eco Team set to work from day one to make plans of What? When? and Where? to plant. Pupils worked on the growing area, on lunch times and through an after school club. In just one school year the school has built the allotment and shed, planted fruits and vegetables, harvested twice, used crops in the school kitchen, and had an amazing plant sale raising over £60. A fine example of a school! I look foward to working with Fens primary next year!
