Helping Barn Owls Thrive Locally

Since 2019, Tees Valley Wildlife Trust has been working with landowners and experienced volunteers to build a network of specially designed barn owl nest boxes across East Cleveland and the wider Tees Valley.

More than 400 nest boxes have been installed so far, helping to create safe breeding spaces across the landscape.

Each year, licensed volunteers carefully monitor the boxes, recording breeding activity and ringing chicks as part of wider conservation work. New boxes are installed where needed and older ones repaired or replaced, helping to secure a future for barn owls in our area.

Sponsor a Barn Owl Nest Box in 2026

Support barn owls in the Tees Valley by sponsoring a nest box for 2026.

For £10, you can help provide a safe place for barn owls to breed across East Cleveland and the wider Tees Valley. Nest boxes replace the traditional nesting sites that have been lost from old farm buildings and mature trees, helping these much-loved birds continue to thrive locally.

As a sponsor, you’ll receive:

  • Information about the general location of your sponsored nest box

  • Email updates during the breeding season (from late April or early May)

  • News of any activity recorded by our licensed volunteers

Nature can be unpredictable. Some boxes may be used by other wildlife, while others may remain empty. But each nest box helps give barn owls the best possible chance of success.

Your sponsorship helps cover the costs of:

  • Volunteer travel for licensed nest box monitors

  • Bird ringing as part of national conservation studies

  • Repairing and replacing older nest boxes
