PE and sports premium for primary schools

If your school is eligible for the PE and sport premium for primary schools, we can help you make the most of your funding through meaningful outdoor learning experiences.

Funding can be used to enhance your existing PE and sport offer and build long-term capacity within your school. Our sessions are designed to give pupils valuable outdoor experiences while supporting staff development and future learning.

At Tees Valley Wildlife Trust, we deliver structured, high-quality outdoor learning led by experienced environmental educators. As members of the Institute of Outdoor Learning, we provide purposeful sessions that combine physical activity with exploration, teamwork and connection to the natural world.

Outdoor learning supports physical health, confidence, resilience and communication skills, while also helping pupils develop a stronger understanding of the environment and their place within it.

What we offer

Our sessions can combine curriculum learning with outdoor activity, PE and sport, tailored to the needs of your school.

Example sessions:

Orienteering
Woodhill Meadows offers a safe and varied setting for beginners. Pupils learn to read maps, navigate routes and work together to solve challenges.

Shelter building and survival skills
A creative, hands-on session where pupils design and build shelters while learning about habitats and survival in nature.

Moorland expedition
A guided walk through meadow, woodland and moorland landscapes, exploring habitats, land use and the natural environment.

Challenge event
A series of outdoor challenges designed to build teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills, alongside environmental awareness.

Longer-term opportunities:

Forest School
Regular, immersive outdoor sessions that support confidence, independence and resilience. Children learn through exploration, play and practical activities in a natural setting, all year round.

We offer everything from one-off sessions to full Forest School programmes, tailored to your school.

John Muir Award
This national environmental award encourages young people to discover, explore and care for wild places.

We can support your school with flexible programmes, from single sessions to longer-term involvement. This award helps pupils:

  • discover and explore natural environments
  • take part in practical conservation
  • share their experiences through creative work

Staff development

We also offer CPD opportunities to help staff build confidence in facilitating and delivering outdoor learning and we can support you with the long-term impact of this in your school.

Courses include:

  • Environmental art
  • Outdoor numeracy
  • Outdoor literacy
  • Forest School training

We work with North Yorkshire Forest School Training to deliver accredited courses at Woodhill Meadows, our base at Margrove Park. The Level 3 Forest School qualification is ideal for staff looking to lead their own sessions and embed outdoor learning within their school.
