The Tees Valley is rich in geological interest as well as wildlife, and protecting both has long been part of Tees Valley Wildlife Trust’s work.

Over a decade ago, we established the Tees Valley RIGS Group to carry out a geological audit of the area. This work identified a number of important sites, helping to secure their recognition and protection within local planning policies.

These sites, once known as Regionally Important Geological Sites (RIGS), are now referred to as Local Geological Sites, highlighting their value in understanding the landscape, history and natural heritage of the Tees Valley.

The RIGS Group has delivered some exciting geological projects in recent years including Alum, Alchemy and Ammonites which looked at the historic Alum Industry of East Cleveland and an investigation of the Jurassic Plant Fossils of Marske Quarry

If you're interested in geology, you can become a member of the RIGS Groups. There is no annual subscription, just plenty of opportunities to visit local geological sites and contribute to ongoing projects and research.
